UPDATE ON MBTA LAYOVER STATION PROJECT
The Board of Selectmen voted on March 25, 2013 to request that the Office of Inspector General (OIG) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) review evidence of misrepresentation, waste, and mismanagement in the awarding and execution of the TIGER grant for the Wachusett Station and Layover Station. The Board is asking that the OIG investigate the project and that DOT withhold further funding until the investigation has been completed. The Board does not believe that the project can achieve the job-creation and economic-stimulus benefits promised in the grant. In addition, the grant application did not have the local support asserted by the applicant. The Board of Selectmen has pursued every available option and has repeatedly asked MBTA and MART to address the Town’s concerns, without success.
