ADVISORY: Solid Waste Drop-off Center Waste Oil Tank

The following is an update regarding the recent closings of the waste oil tank area at the Solid Waste Drop-off Center.
Waste Oil Tank

Please be advised, the waste oil tank at the Solid Waste Drop-off Center was re-opened on May 4, 2023 after being taken “offline” for cleaning due to contamination. To avoid another shutdown, we ask that residents disposing of waste oil do their part by bringing back used oil in an oil container. Milk jugs, Clorox bottles, and any containers other than the original which contains used oil will not be accepted. Alternate containers may have held, at one time, a liquid which will “taint" the oil with a chlorine or other disinfecting material which will contaminate the waste oil storage tank.

The Solid Waste Drop-off Center will also not be accepting used oil with any additives or “Cleaning Agents” used to remove engine oil sludge, as these products also have potential to contaminate the waste oil storage tank and close it for a period of time, or possibly permanently. If you possess materials that may be in question, they can be brought to the Fitchburg-Westminster Landfill on Hazardous Waste Collection Day, which will be held on July 8, 2023 and November 11, 2023.

Safe management and disposal of waste oil protects not just drinking water, fish, and land, but also you and your family. The EPA has more basic information for handling used oil at home. Should you have any questions, please contact the Westminster Department of Public Works at (978) 874-5572.
